DPNM Honors Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today the New Mexico Democratic Party, along with citizens around the state, celebrates the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As our Nation celebrates the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century, it is important to remember the breadth and influence of his message and vision.

While the 2008 election of the first African American President, Barack Obama, was certainly a validation of Dr. Kings’ dream – we cannot stop until equality exists between all peoples. Fairness and justice are two of our most fundamental and essential civil liberties that we must always fight and defend.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta Georgia. Throughout his life, King had numerous accomplishments and accolades including the successful Montgomery bus boycott beginning in 1955, the March on Washington in 1963, and being the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to Civil Rights in 1964.

Americans have recognized King’s birthday annually on the third Monday in January since 1986 when the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday was instituted.

The Democratic Party of New Mexico will continue its’ fight to protect the principles and ideals Dr. King left behind. We hope this day finds you well and we appreciate your support.
